Life offers us amazing experiences. And yet, despite all the beauty around us, so many of us numb ourselves from it. We protect ourselves from our pain when we do this, but we also make it harder to live life to the fullest.
So how do we balance this? How do we feel deeply and vividly without overwhelming ourselves with pain?
Emotional numbness and dissociation are protective mechanisms. They’re intentionally shielding us from pains in the past or present that our minds believe we cannot handle. Numbness and dissociation are loving protectors, doing their best to keep us safe.
Despite all the good they do us, they also make it difficult to live life to the fullest. After all, is it possible to experience life in all its glory when we’re detached from it?
I believe so. I believe it is possible for you to still feel some detachment, some numbness, some dissociation and live life to the fullest. When you embrace your experience, no matter what that is, you will find this fulfillment.
By feeling all your experiences, the good and the bad, you can live life to the fullest
Dissociation is an experience, just like joy. Anger is an experience, just like apathy. All feelings are experiences and, when we turn our attention towards our inner experience of the world around us, we begin to live life to the fullest.
